The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken action against a Chinese supermarket located in Wuse 2, Abuja, for breaking its rules. The store, based at Azba Mall, was shut down for selling expired products and goods labeled in Chinese without English translations.

According to Shaba Mohammed, the Director of Investigation and Enforcement at NAFDAC, the agency received reliable information about the supermarket’s activities. During their inspection, they found that more than 90% of the items in the store had Chinese labels. This is against Nigerian regulations, which require all imported products to have English translations for customers to understand.

Some of the products were also expired but were still being sold to customers. The store could not provide NAFDAC with proper documents to prove the items had been approved for sale in Nigeria. Mohammed suggested that the supermarket might have bypassed proper importation processes.

NAFDAC has started an investigation to uncover how these products were brought into the country. The agency will also inspect the supermarket’s warehouse to stop the sale of any more unapproved or expired items.

Mohammed stressed that selling goods without English translations is illegal in Nigeria, as it prevents customers from understanding product details. He added that the agency is committed to protecting consumers and ensuring all products meet NAFDAC’s safety standards.

The agency warned that the store could face serious consequences, including administrative penalties. Mohammed assured Nigerians that NAFDAC will continue to enforce its regulations and take action against businesses that fail to comply.

This action serves as a reminder to businesses to adhere to NAFDAC’s rules to avoid putting consumers’ health at risk.
