Miss Nollywood International, Hassana Ozohu Salisu, recently shared a distressing account of her journey on the Itakpe-Warri train service. Her story paints a vivid picture of the struggles faced by Nigerian train passengers, highlighting the urgent need for reforms in the country’s railway system.
Hassana’s journey began at 10:00 am when she arrived at the train station to catch a 2:00 pm train. However, the train didn’t leave until 7:30 pm—over five hours late. This delay wasn’t just inconvenient; it created safety concerns, especially as there were no security personnel onboard.
Once the train finally departed, passengers faced even more challenges. The train was overcrowded, with people squeezed into every available space. Basic facilities were non-functional, with locked toilets forcing passengers to resort to using bottles. Many endured the discomfort in silence, while others, particularly women, cried out in frustration.
Adding to the chaos were frequent mechanical failures and prolonged baggage loading at each stop, which delayed the journey even further. These experiences reflect a railway system struggling to meet the most basic expectations of safety and comfort.
Hassana questioned the government’s commitment to the railway system, asking why a country with such resources allows its citizens to endure such indignities. She urged the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the Ministry of Transportation to take responsibility and invest in improving the system.
“The railway network should provide safe, reliable, and comfortable transportation for citizens,” Hassana emphasized. She called on the authorities to prioritize service improvement and address the longstanding issues that continue to plague the railway system.
Hassana noted that the issues with the railway system are part of a broader problem affecting Nigeria’s infrastructure. Poor transportation services are just one of many challenges facing a nation where economic struggles hinder progress, especially for the youth.
She highlighted the need for the government to invest in infrastructure that empowers citizens and improves their quality of life. “Nigeria is a resource-rich country, and its people deserve better,” she said.
Miss Nollywood International’s account is a reminder of the need for accountability and action. Nigerians deserve a railway system that serves their needs, respects their dignity, and supports the nation’s growth.
As citizens, it’s essential to demand better infrastructure and reforms that prioritize safety, reliability, and comfort. Together, we can push for changes that reflect Nigeria’s true potential and create a brighter future for all.
