President Bola Tinubu has explained why state governors receive the majority of federal revenue allocations, stating that their role is critical to Nigeria’s development. Speaking during a New Year visit by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) at his Ikoyi residence, Tinubu emphasized that governors are central to driving food security, economic growth, and national prosperity.
According to Tinubu, the Federal Government keeps only 30-35% of the nation’s revenue, while the remaining 65% is allocated to the states. He explained that this is because governors control the land and are responsible for implementing policies that impact the agricultural sector, infrastructure, and grassroots development.
“You are the main link to Nigeria’s progress. The agricultural value chain depends on you, as you own the land and oversee its usage,” Tinubu said.
He stressed the need for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments to address pressing challenges like local government autonomy, agricultural development, and currency stability.
Tinubu reassured the governors that there is no conflict over local government autonomy. Instead, he urged them to focus on grassroots development and fulfill the expectations of their communities.
“We are not fighting over local government autonomy. Work effectively at the grassroots level, and let’s collaborate to make Nigeria better,” he added.
The President highlighted agriculture as a key driver of economic stability. He urged governors to invest in agricultural productivity to ensure food security and strengthen Nigeria’s economy.
“We must grow more, work harder, and stabilize our currency. Nigeria’s prosperity requires collective effort,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu praised the governors for their achievements, noting that every state has made visible progress. He acknowledged that better revenue allocations have enabled governors to deliver more projects and improve their states.
“There’s no state we can’t visit and be proud of its development. Together, we will build a nation we all can be proud of,” he stated.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, commended Tinubu’s policies, particularly in agriculture. He highlighted how recent reforms have led to bumper harvests and food security. Abdulrazak also assured the President of the governors’ support in enhancing local security and driving economic growth.
As Tinubu continues his leadership journey, he expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, emphasizing the importance of unity and consistent effort to achieve national progress.
“The policies are working, and we are on the right path. Together, we will create a better Nigeria for all,” he concluded.
