The Kogi State Government has announced plans to recover housing units illegally taken over across its 21 local government areas.
The Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Abanika Taiye, explained that the illegal occupation of homes under the National Housing Program (NHP) is alarming. He noted that the NHP is a federal initiative aimed at providing affordable and sustainable housing for citizens. Unfortunately, recent findings reveal that about 85% of the houses in Phases 1, 2, and 3 of the program have been forcefully taken over by unauthorized individuals.
“This situation disrupts the program’s purpose and denies rightful owners their homes,” Taiye said.
To tackle this, the ministry has begun efforts to address the issue. They are processing returned housing units and ensuring legitimate subscribers who have followed the proper steps receive their homes. The government is also committed to using law enforcement to secure these properties and prevent further illegal occupation.
The commissioner assured citizens that the state government prioritizes housing equity and fairness. “We are dedicated to making housing accessible, sustainable, and affordable for everyone in Kogi State,” he said.
This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to empowering its people and maintaining the integrity of the National Housing Program. By working together with residents, the government aims to ensure that every deserving citizen has the opportunity to own a home.
