The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has declared its readiness to help the Anambra State Government tackle the growing insecurity in the region. This includes addressing the activities of unknown gunmen, kidnappers, and other criminals hiding in the state’s forests.

The Commander of the NFSS in Anambra, Destiny Jonas, shared this during a recent press briefing. He stated that the rising cases of kidnappings and killings, such as the December 30, 2024, attack that claimed eight lives in Ihiala, demand immediate action.

Jonas emphasized that the NFSS is well-equipped to assist in securing forests for safety and economic development. “Our operations focus on forests and bushes. We know these areas well and can help flush out criminal elements,” he said.

Jonas urged collaboration between the NFSS, the Anambra State Government, and other security agencies. He stressed that official recognition of the NFSS and coordinated efforts are vital for success.

The NFSS has already begun efforts to enhance security by working alongside the police and other security groups. During the festive season, they rescued some kidnapped victims and ensured safety in remote areas like Achala, Igbariam, and Nsugbe.

Starting January 2025, the NFSS plans to intensify operations in known crime hotspots. They aim to dismantle criminal camps and reclaim the forests for legitimate use.

The insecurity has driven investors away from Anambra, Jonas noted. He called for urgent measures to restore confidence and attract businesses back to the state.

Jonas praised Dr. John Metchie, Deputy Commander-General of NFSS, for his dedication to security in Anambra and across Nigeria. He also thanked Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, Commander-General of NFSS, for fostering unity and purpose within the service.

The NFSS remains committed to making Anambra forests safe from criminal activities like kidnappings and deforestation. Jonas assured residents that the service is determined to turn the tide and make the state a safe haven once more.
