Biafra: Tinubu refused to honour agreement to release Nnamdi Kanu – Family

The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has accused President Bola Tinubu of breaking a promise made before the 2023 presidential election.

Kanunta Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, revealed that he met with Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, during the election period. The meeting, according to Kanunta, was approved by Bola Tinubu himself. The discussion centered around a deal: IPOB would not boycott the 2023 elections in exchange for Kanu’s release if Tinubu became president.

The meeting took place in Abuja, and a witness was present to confirm the details. During the discussion, Seyi Tinubu assured Kanunta that his father supported the agreement. Following this, Kanunta informed his brother, who agreed not to interfere with the elections.

When Bola Tinubu visited Owerri during his campaign, he publicly reiterated his promise to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release if elected. This further convinced Kanu’s family that the agreement would be honored.

However, almost two years into Tinubu’s presidency, Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention, despite having no charges filed against him. Kanunta expressed frustration over the delay in assigning a new judge to Kanu’s case since Justice Binta Nyako recused herself over three months ago.

Kanunta called the situation unfair and criticized the government for failing to keep its word. He argued that the promise made during the elections should not be ignored, especially since IPOB upheld its part of the agreement.

The family now awaits action from the government to address the injustice and ensure Nnamdi Kanu’s release.
