Police launch investigation as Catholic priest shoots boy dead in Imo

A Catholic priest in Imo State has been accused of shooting and killing a boy after the boy set off firecrackers (knockouts) within a church premises. The tragic event has been confirmed by the Nigeria Police Force, although the identity of the priest and the boy remains undisclosed.

Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, stated that the police have started investigating the case. “The police have commenced an investigation into the matter. This is all I can say for the moment,” he said.

Reports suggest the incident happened when the boy lit firecrackers, causing the priest to react by using a firearm. This act has sparked outrage, especially on social media, with many condemning the excessive response.

A Facebook post shared on the account ‘For The Love Of Anambra’ earlier stated that the priest fatally shot the boy shortly after the firecrackers went off.

As details continue to emerge, many are demanding justice and a thorough investigation into the incident.
