Italy-based Nigerian businesswoman escapes death by whiskers as ex-husband allegedly sets her house ablaze in Edo

In a shocking incident on New Year’s Day, Tina Uyi, a 54-year-old businesswoman based in Italy, narrowly survived an alleged arson attack in Benin City, Edo State. Her ex-husband, Osaro Ahunwan, 55, reportedly set her house ablaze after she refused to let him inside.

The incident occurred at Tina’s home on Iduomwina Street, Isihor community, just days after her return to Nigeria on December 31, 2024. Tina sustained severe third-degree burns in the attack and is currently being treated at a private hospital in Benin City.

Eyewitnesses reported that Osaro appeared at Tina’s window late at night, demanding to be let in. Despite his threats, Tina refused, citing their broken relationship and the return of her bride price in April 2024. Furious, Osaro allegedly shattered the windows, poured petrol inside the house, and set it on fire with a lighter.

The fire destroyed Tina’s home, along with her travel documents, a significant amount of money, and packages from Italy. Tina’s elderly parents, who are in their 90s, were rescued from the flames by neighbors before firefighters arrived to extinguish the blaze.

Speaking from her hospital bed, Tina recounted her troubled marriage to Osaro. She described him as controlling, abusive, and prone to violent outbursts. In 2023, he allegedly threatened to kill her and damaged her car during a disagreement. These incidents prompted Tina to end their two-year marriage.

Shockingly, police investigations revealed that Tina’s elder brother, Odaro Ovia Robo, aided Osaro in the attack. Osaro confessed to paying Odaro N5,000 for information about Tina’s return and staying at Odaro’s apartment before the incident. Odaro reportedly provided the petrol and lighter used in the arson.

Sources disclosed that Odaro harbored resentment toward Tina, accusing her of not providing enough financial support despite building a hotel. Tina had previously sponsored Odaro’s trip abroad in 2003, but he returned to Nigeria after 10 years and has since depended on her for financial assistance.

Both Osaro and Odaro have been arrested and remain in police custody. Edo State Police Command confirmed the arrests and stated that investigations are ongoing.

This tragic incident highlights the dangers of unresolved domestic disputes and family betrayals. Tina’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience and courage required to overcome such devastating experiences.
