Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has clarified that there is no merger deal with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political party ahead of the 2027 elections.
During a press conference in Abuja, the former Anambra State governor emphasized that no agreement has been reached with any party so far. However, he called on Nigerians and political leaders to unite to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election. He criticized the APC for what he described as poor management of the country’s resources.
Obi expressed deep concern about Nigeria’s security issues, including widespread banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping. He stated that many lives are being lost unnecessarily due to the country’s worsening security situation.
He also condemned the high level of corruption and rising government expenses, which have led to a significant increase in public debt under the administration of President Bola Tinubu. Obi accused government officials of misusing public funds in 2024 through frequent and unnecessary foreign trips.
In the 2023 elections, Tinubu secured 8.79 million votes, emerging as the winner. Atiku Abubakar of the PDP received 6.98 million votes, while Obi, contesting for the first time, garnered 6.10 million votes, an impressive feat. Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP came fourth with 1.49 million votes, winning only in Kano State.
Interestingly, Obi and Kwankwaso were previously members of the PDP but left due to internal disagreements before the 2023 elections.
As Nigerians prepare for the 2027 elections, Obi’s call for unity highlights his vision for tackling the country’s challenges and creating a better future.
