A violent attack by gunmen in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday, December 30, 2024, resulted in the death of seven people. Among the victims were two unarmed civilians, who were preparing for a burial ceremony scheduled for January 2, 2025, and several security operatives.
The gunmen opened fire around 11:20 a.m. at the burial venue, killing two members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG), as shown in a viral video circulating on social media. As they fled, they shot two security operatives stationed at a nearby observation post.
The police have confirmed the incident. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police spokesperson, said that a joint security team rescued one of the victims, who is now receiving medical attention.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the site and spoke to witnesses. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that the attackers would be brought to justice.
Authorities are actively working to locate the perpetrators and prevent further violence in the area.
