The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has experienced a major political shift as over 10,000 of its members, led by Engr. Julius Inedu, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This significant event unfolded in Orokam and Owukpa, both in the Ogbadibo Local Government Area.
Among the defectors were key figures such as former lawmaker Hon. Michael Abakpa, Hon. Michael Idoko, who recently served as the PDP chairman in Ehaje II, and James Agene, a long-standing PDP executive member since 1999. Others included Hon. Onoja Obute, the immediate past deputy leader of the Ogbadibo Legislative Council, and the PDP’s former women leader.
The defection ceremony, held in Ekere Owukpa, featured a symbolic act where the defectors burned their PDP membership cards. Engr. Inedu, speaking on behalf of the group, expressed their faith in the APC’s vision of progress and development.
“I have seen the light of progress in the APC,” Inedu declared. “I call on the people of Ehaje II and Ogbadibo to join us in embracing the development led by Hon. Philip Agbese. The PDP is no longer the path forward for us.”
Comrade Austine Agada, the APC State Chairman, welcomed the defectors and described the event as a landmark moment for Benue politics. He assured them of full inclusion in the party, emphasizing that their move was a reflection of the APC’s commitment to transformative leadership.
Hon. Philip Agbese, who represents Ado, Okpokwu, and Ogbadibo in the Federal House of Representatives, also praised the new members for their decision. “This defection shows your belief in our vision. Together, we will build a brighter future for Ogbadibo and the entire state,” he said.
The APC leadership assured the new members of equal opportunities within the party as they work together toward unity and development in Benue State.
This mass defection marks a significant turning point in the state’s political landscape, solidifying the APC’s growing influence in the region.
