The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) $50,000 for misconduct during a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin.
The match, held in Benghazi, ended in a 0-0 draw, which secured Benin’s place in the upcoming tournament. However, the result angered Libyan fans, who responded by throwing stones and bottles at the Benin team. Benin’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, reported that both players and officials were assaulted by the fans and even the police after the game.
CAF’s Disciplinary Board investigated the incident and found the Libyan Football Federation guilty of breaching Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. These articles relate to the behavior of supporters and officials, both during and after the match.
As punishment, Libya’s football team will have to play its next two official national team matches behind closed doors. Additionally, the Libyan Football Federation has been fined $50,000.
This fine follows a previous incident involving Libya, when they were also fined $50,000 after a chaotic situation with the Nigerian national team. The Nigerian players were left stranded at the Al-Abraq International Airport for over 20 hours before abandoning their match.
CAF’s decision highlights the importance of maintaining order and respect in football, both on and off the field.
