Someone Earning N170,000 Will Now Earn N360,000 Monthly In Oyo As Makinde Orders 86% Salary Increase From January

In a bold move to improve the welfare of workers, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved an 86% increase in salaries. Starting January 2025, the minimum wage will rise to N80,000, benefiting workers across all grades in the state.

A Record-Breaking Salary Increase

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, revealed this in a statement. He explained that the state’s monthly salary budget will increase from N6.4 billion to N11.9 billion, amounting to an annual wage commitment of over N143 billion.

Commitment to Workers’ Welfare

Governor Makinde has shown a deep commitment to workers’ welfare while balancing the needs of other sectors. Oyelade emphasized that Makinde’s administration has done more for workers than any previous government in the state.

Addressing Longstanding Issues

Makinde resolved a four-year promotion backlog that existed before he took office in 2019. This proactive approach has earned him accolades from workers and labor unions.

Praise from Labor Leaders

Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman, Comrade Kayode Martins, commended the governor for his consistent support of workers. Martins referred to the new minimum wage as the best in the country, comparing it favorably to those of other states and the federal government.

Significant Salary Adjustments

Under the new structure, workers on Grade Levels 1 to 6 will see their salaries increase from N30,000 to N80,000, while higher-grade workers will enjoy increments of up to N180,000. For instance, a Grade Level 17 worker earning N170,000 monthly will now receive N360,000.

Boosting Morale and the Economy

The timely payment of salaries on the 25th of each month has already boosted workers’ morale and positively impacted the state’s economy. This latest increment will further strengthen the cordial relationship between the government and labor unions.

Setting a Benchmark

Oyo’s groundbreaking salary adjustments have set a new standard in Nigeria, with other states yet to match the level of commitment shown by Governor Makinde’s administration.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to increase salaries by 86% reaffirms his commitment to workers’ welfare. This historic move not only benefits workers but also enhances economic stability and sets a benchmark for labor relations in Nigeria.
