The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is taking bold steps to strengthen its air capabilities in the ongoing fight against insurgency. According to the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the NAF plans to acquire 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters. This move, revealed during a Christmas luncheon with NAF personnel in Maiduguri, aims to improve the effectiveness of the Air Force in addressing the country’s security challenges.
The new aircraft will add to the NAF’s existing fleet, which includes A-29 Super Tucanos, JF-17 Thunders, and T129 Attack Helicopters. Air Marshal Abubakar stressed that modern and versatile platforms are crucial to addressing the security challenges facing Nigeria today. These additional aircraft will help the NAF maintain operational readiness and enhance its ability to combat insurgents.
In addition to acquiring new equipment, the NAF is committed to ongoing capacity building, personnel training, and research to further improve operational efficiency. The CAS also used the occasion to reflect on the sacrifices of NAF personnel, urging them to take time during the holiday season to reflect on their work and unity.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, who was represented by Prof. Usman Tar, expressed appreciation for the NAF’s critical role in combating terrorism and providing humanitarian support in northeastern Nigeria. He also praised the NAF’s timely assistance during recent flooding in Maiduguri, which included airlifting relief materials and providing medical support.
Air Marshal Abubakar also honored the fallen heroes who lost their lives in the service of Nigeria, emphasizing their bravery and sacrifice. The CAS assured that their memory would always be cherished as they continue to inspire others in the fight for national security.
