On Christmas Day, tragedy struck the Nyiev-ya area of Kwande Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State as gunmen attacked several communities, leaving at least 11 people dead. The residents, who were celebrating Christmas with their families, were caught off guard when armed attackers, believed to be herders, stormed the villages.
The attack targeted communities like Ubutu and GSS Anwase, where gunmen killed people and set homes on fire. One local resident shared that the son of Daniel Jam was among those killed. The attackers also carried out similar violent acts in other areas, including Tse Azege and Ityuluv, in Nyiev-ya.
The violence continued even on December 26, with residents growing increasingly concerned. Local leaders have confirmed that many are still missing, and the attacks have left the community in fear. Iorbee Ihagh, the President General of Mzough U Tiv Worldwide, expressed deep concern, calling the attack unprovoked and devastating.
The residents have reported the incident to the police, but the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Sewuese Anene, has yet to comment on the situation. As the community reels from the loss, locals are urging both the government and law enforcement to take swift action to stop further violence.
The people of Benue are now praying for peace and hoping for a timely response from the authorities to prevent more bloodshed in their communities.
