In a dramatic rescue operation on December 26, 2024, three men were saved from a blocked manhole in the Guzape area of Asokoro District, Abuja. The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) led the effort, with help from the FCT Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Two of the trapped men were labourers working to clear debris from the manhole, which was blocking a central sewage system. Unfortunately, a build-up of methane gas inside the manhole caused an explosion, trapping and suffocating the workers.
The third person caught in the manhole was a volunteer who tried to assist the labourers. All three men were rescued and taken to hospitals for treatment. One is receiving care at Wuse General Hospital, while the other two are being treated at Asokoro District Hospital.
Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, thanked the emergency teams for their quick action, which prevented a possible tragedy. He also advised residents to leave the maintenance of public infrastructure to the appropriate government agencies.
