Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has raised concerns over the police’s refusal to release popular singer Speed Darlington. This comes after the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his release on Monday, December 23.

Police Detention Since November
Speed Darlington has been in police custody since November 27, following his re-arrest in Owerri, Imo State. According to reports, the arrest happened after the singer allegedly jumped bail. His initial arrest in October stemmed from a petition filed by his colleague, Burna Boy.

Court-Granted Unconditional Bail
Court records reveal that Speed Darlington was granted unconditional bail. The process only requires his legal team to submit the court ruling to the police legal department, which would then send it to the Force Investigation Department (FID) for compliance.

No Compliance From the Police
Despite the submission of the court order by Speed Darlington’s legal team, the police have yet to take any action or respond. This delay has kept the singer in detention unnecessarily.

A Month in Custody
As of December 27, Speed Darlington will have spent an entire month in detention since his re-arrest.
