A leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, Mr. Sunday Ikechukwu Damian, has warned Governor Peter Mbah about an alleged plan by Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu, a House of Representatives member for Awgu/Oji-River/Aninri Federal Constituency, to remove elected ward leaders of the party in Oji River.
Damian made this known in a statement shared with journalists on Thursday.
He claimed that the lawmaker recently met with the PDP state chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, to seek support for replacing the ward executives with his own chosen candidates.
Damian expressed disappointment, saying, “We worked hard to help Onwuegbu win the election, but now he is lobbying to remove the ward executives and replace them with people of his choice.”
Initially, they dismissed the rumors, but as events unfolded, they realized there might be some truth to the claims.
Damian said the plan became clearer after a recent meeting between Onwuegbu, Dr. Uche Ugochukwu, and the state PDP chairman, where this agenda was discussed.
According to Damian, the state chairman promised to consult the Chief of Staff of the Enugu State Government House before making a decision.
The ward leaders are concerned that since Onwuegbu was elected, he has not held any stakeholder meetings or briefed the people of Oji, Awgu, and Aninri on his activities.
Instead, Damian accused Onwuegbu of creating division in the constituency rather than uniting the people.
He advised the lawmaker to work with the ward executives instead of attempting to remove them.
Damian criticized Onwuegbu for focusing on this plan instead of sharing Christmas gifts with party members like other lawmakers.
He reminded Onwuegbu that these ward executives played key roles in electing the local government, zonal, and state executives of the PDP.
Damian argued that rejecting the ward executives would mean rejecting the entire party structure in Enugu State.
He called on Governor Mbah to address these undemocratic actions that could harm the party.
Damian also urged the state PDP chairman to resist actions that could destabilize the party.
Finally, he advised Dr. Uche Ugochukwu to distance himself from activities that could create problems within the party, warning that such actions could be considered anti-party behavior.
Efforts to get a response from Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
