A recent review by SaharaReporters on the public payments platform, Govspend, revealed that ₦176 million was spent on Vice President Kashim Shettima’s trip to Côte d’Ivoire.
According to the records, $117,524 was allocated on January 9, 2024, for Shettima’s journey to Bouake, Côte d’Ivoire. This expenditure was tied to his attendance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match.
On February 7, 2024, Vice President Shettima departed Abuja for Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to show support for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their semi-final clash with South Africa during the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON tournament.
Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), disclosed that the trip was made on the instruction of President Bola Tinubu. The purpose of the visit, Nkwocha said, was to promote unity and rally national support for the team.
Nkwocha urged Nigerians across the world to cheer on the Super Eagles, emphasizing the nation’s solidarity with the team.
The Super Eagles secured a hard-fought victory over South Africa through penalties, winning 4-2 at the Stade De la Paix in Bouake, Côte d’Ivoire.
In addition, it was reported that on February 24, 2024, $93,004 (₦86.7 million) was approved for another trip by the Vice President to Liberia.
