Sit-At-Home Cripples Yuletide Shopping, Commercial Activities In Anambra

The usual excitement and rush that come with the Christmas season were missing in Anambra State on Monday, as a sit-at-home order disrupted business and daily activities. Many residents stayed indoors, leaving major cities like Onitsha, Nnewi, Ekwulobia, and Awka unusually quiet.

Key public places such as markets, banks, motor parks, and petrol stations were closed, halting the flow of economic activities. The typically busy Second Niger Bridge and major roads across the state saw very little movement. Though the presence of police officers helped ensure safety, many travelers were hesitant to embark on their journeys due to fear of insecurity.

Residents found it difficult to prepare for the festivities as Christmas shopping was affected. Banks were closed, and automated teller machines (ATMs) were inaccessible, forcing many to rely on Point of Sale (PoS) operators who charged high transaction fees.

A businessman at Onitsha Main Market shared his frustration, saying, “I came to the market, but sales were poor because customers didn’t show up. The sit-at-home has affected our income and preparations for Christmas.”

The sit-at-home not only caused tension but also interrupted holiday preparations, leaving many struggling to meet their needs during this festive period.
