In 2024, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant progress in fighting drug trafficking and abuse in Kogi State. The agency arrested 284 suspects and seized over 5 million kilograms of illegal drugs, along with counterfeit currency worth millions of dollars.
Between January and December 2024, the NDLEA took action against drug-related crimes, seizing drugs like Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol, Diazepam, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, and Heroin. The total drug seizure exceeded 5,232,575 kilograms. The agency also confiscated counterfeit currency valued at $2 million and N20.4 million.
As part of its efforts to fight illegal drug production, the NDLEA destroyed 10 hectares of marijuana plantations in Kogi State. This action is a significant step in curbing drug trafficking and reducing the availability of marijuana in the region.
The agency’s efforts have led to 91 convictions, with more cases currently under trial in the Federal High Court in Lokoja. The NDLEA remains committed to enforcing the law and bringing drug offenders to justice.
Alongside enforcement, the NDLEA has focused on drug abuse prevention. In 2024, the agency sensitized 51 schools and organizations about the dangers of drug abuse. Furthermore, 195 individuals received counseling as part of the NDLEA’s drug demand reduction program.
Despite the challenges they face, NDLEA officials, led by Mustapha Yahuza, have shown dedication and hard work in making Kogi State safer. The NDLEA Commander has issued a stern warning against the use and trafficking of hard drugs, emphasizing the devastating effects they have on individuals and society.
The seized drugs and counterfeit money have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation and prosecution. The NDLEA continues to fight against drug abuse and trafficking to protect communities and strengthen the country’s law enforcement efforts.
