The Lagos State government is taking significant steps to improve public transportation. By 2025, new trains will be added to the Red and Blue Line corridors, enhancing train services for Lagos residents.
Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), shared this update in a video message. She also announced that more buses will be introduced to the regulated fleet to provide better transportation options for the city.
Beyond upgrading existing lines, Lagos is working on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Green and Purple Lines. These projects are part of the government’s plan to expand the city’s rail network.
- Green Line: A 68-kilometer rail that will connect the Lekki Free Zone to Marina.
- Purple Line: A line connecting Redemption Camp to Ojo, near Lagos State University (LASU).
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has signed agreements with key partners to make these ambitious projects a reality.
The Blue Line, spanning 27 kilometers, started operations in September 2023. By December 2024, it had already transported 2.37 million passengers. Phase 2 of the project is currently in progress.
The Red Line, a 37-kilometer corridor, began construction in April 2021. Its first phase, connecting Agbado to Oyingbo, opened in October 2024. Work on Phase 2 is also underway.
LAMATA is also focusing on sustainability. The agency is exploring eco-friendly fuels to reduce emissions and improve the payment system for transportation services.
These initiatives align with the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan, which aims to create a robust metro rail system with six Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines.
Lagosians can look forward to a more reliable and eco-friendly transportation system as the government works to meet the city’s growing needs.
