Police deny asking Nigerians to beat, stone officers searching their phones

The Nigeria Police Force has denied claims that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun instructed citizens to attack officers who request to search their phones. The false report went viral on social media, causing confusion.

A message circulated online, claiming that the IGP advised Nigerians to “beat up any policeman who asks to check your phone” and even throw stones at officers if they carry a gun. This report was quickly shared but was revealed to be entirely fake.

In response, the Nigeria Police Force, through its spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that such instructions had never been issued by the IGP. Instead, the IGP has encouraged citizens to report any cases of police misconduct using the correct channels. This approach is meant to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law.

The police emphasized that violence against officers is unacceptable and called for peaceful methods of addressing any issues with law enforcement. The Nigeria Police Force continues to urge citizens to act responsibly and report misconduct calmly.
