On Sunday, December 22, 2024, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, visited Ilorin, Kwara State, following the tragic death of 35-year-old Jimoh Abdulquadri. The young man, who was allegedly killed by police officers, died under suspicious circumstances while in custody.
Jimoh was arrested on December 19, 2024, after being accused of owing N220,000 to a colleague named Peter, who works at Olam Farms in Offa. Reports suggest that Jimoh passed away while in police detention, raising concerns about the circumstances of his death.
During his visit, the IGP spoke with Balogun Fulani, the traditional ruler of the community, and urged the people—especially the youth—not to take the law into their own hands. He assured them that a thorough investigation would be carried out to uncover the truth behind Jimoh’s death. The IGP promised that justice would be served and cautioned against rushing to conclusions before the investigation results were made public.
“I am always very excited to visit Ilorin because when I was posted here in 2020, I was warmly received by the people who often prayed for me. Your prayers then, still go with me, it is not an exaggeration that I claim Ilorin indigeneship.
I am very saddened to be here today on condolence visit on the death of Jimoh whose circumstances surrounding his death is very worrisome.
Justice must be served. I have already directed investigation, I have given necessary directive to the CP here. We will get to the root of this case,” he said
Egbetokun emphasized that the investigation would not be ignored or overlooked, and he asked the community to remain patient as the authorities worked to find out what truly happened.
“Let us not jump into conclusion. I have visited the command and I have directed thorough investigation.”Egbetokun said
