A fire broke out at the Ogbosisi Timber Market in Onitsha, Anambra State, on the night of December 18, 2024, causing significant damage to goods. However, there were no reports of any loss of life. Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, assuring the public that the situation was under control.
Videos shared by an X user, Omaletocracy, showed traders attempting to salvage their goods amidst the fire. The user posted, “Head bridge mkt Onitsha is on fire 18/12/2024.”
To prevent any looting, the area was cordoned off by the police. Authorities are continuing their efforts to assess the damage and manage the situation.
Ikenga said, “The swift response of the Police and Fire service operatives to the outbreak at Ogbosisi on 18/12/2024 by 8.45 pm brought the situation under control.
“Meanwhile, police operatives have cordoned off the scene of the incident to prevent hoodlums from taking undue advantage of the situation to loot properties and goods of individuals in the area.
“The command has, however, begun an investigation into the cause of the fire incident and notes that no life was lost. Also, the worth of goods destroyed is yet to be ascertained.”
