The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called on corps members to stop relocating back to their hometowns during their service year. Instead, they are encouraged to settle into their host communities and make the most of their time there.
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmad, shared this message during a visit to the temporary orientation camp in Kaduna. Speaking to the 2024 Batch C Stream I corps members, he emphasized the importance of adjusting to new environments and creating a sense of belonging wherever they are posted.
Ahmad explained that adapting to new experiences can lead to personal growth and development. He urged corps members to actively contribute to their host communities, respect local cultures, and remain resilient while building positive relationships.
Ahmad highlighted the importance of NYSC’s skills acquisition and entrepreneurship programs. These initiatives are designed to help corps members become self-reliant and productive after their service year. He pointed out that many former participants have used these programs to start businesses and create wealth for themselves.
The Director-General reminded corps members that the Federal Government supports youths by providing empowerment opportunities, enabling them to become independent. He encouraged participants to embrace these initiatives to secure a better future.
While discussing the service year, Ahmad also emphasized the importance of personal security. He assured corps members of NYSC’s commitment to their safety but reminded them to take proactive steps to protect themselves.
Ahmad concluded by urging corps members to view their host communities as an extension of home. By adapting to their surroundings, acquiring skills, and contributing to local development, corps members can turn their service year into a meaningful and rewarding experience.
Let this year be a time for growth, learning, and positive impact in the communities you serve.
