The Nigerian military has successfully dismantled camps of a newly-formed terrorist group called Lakurawa. These operations took place in Katsina and Zamfara States as part of “Operation Chase Lakurawa Out,” a mission aimed at restoring security in the region.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, deployed specialised troops to strengthen ongoing efforts. These troops arrived in Sokoto State on Thursday and are working closely with local forces to achieve their goals.

Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, leading the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, announced significant progress during a briefing in Sokoto. He explained that the operation has cleared multiple forests and destroyed several camps used by the Lakurawa group.

To ensure the mission’s success, the Defence and Special Operations Brigade was deployed. These troops, trained specifically for this operation, have joined forces with existing units to sustain the momentum.

Captain Martins Miagamu, stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Tangaza, reported that operations since December 1, 2024, have focused on key areas like Sarma, Bouni, and Tona—frequent infiltration points for the terrorists.

On December 8, troops successfully drove the terrorists out of Gudu, concluding the first phase of the operation. Preparations for the next phase are underway as directed by General Musa.

Despite these victories, Miagamu noted that local sympathisers and informants continue to pose challenges by helping terrorists evade capture.

Brigadier General Ajose delivered a stern warning to the Lakurawa group: “Surrender or be neutralised. There is no hiding place for you.”

In Katsina, Brigadier General B.O. Omopariola revealed that over 50 bandit groups operate in the state, each with different motives. This diversity makes security efforts more complex. However, Omopariola assured the public that the military, alongside other security agencies, is determined to tackle these threats.
