Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State and now Senator representing Edo North, has defended the appointment of his son, Cyril, as Edo State’s Commissioner for Health. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oshiomhole explained why Cyril is qualified for the role despite public criticism.
Cyril Oshiomhole was appointed by Governor Monday Okphebolo in November shortly after the governor assumed office. Critics have accused the governor of rewarding Oshiomhole for his political support during the election.
When asked about his opinion on the appointment, Oshiomhole said he had expressed concerns to the governor, worrying about how people might perceive the decision. “I called the governor and shared my concerns. I also spoke to Cyril because I knew people might criticize the appointment,” he said.
Oshiomhole explained that Cyril’s qualifications, not family connections, earned him the position. Cyril is a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University and holds postgraduate degrees from prestigious institutions, including Harvard University and a university in Louisiana, with a focus on public health.
“I invested in my children’s education so they wouldn’t have to struggle like I did,” Oshiomhole said. “Cyril is not getting this role because he is my son. He earned it because of his qualifications and expertise.”
The senator also clarified that the decision to appoint Cyril was solely the governor’s choice, adding, “Cyril is an adult, and I can only guide him so much.”
Despite the criticisms, Oshiomhole is confident that Cyril will deliver in his new role, emphasizing his passion and training in public health.
