A lawyer has apologized to Bello El-Rufai, a representative of Kaduna North, for sharing false information about him on social media.
The incident began when the lawyer tweeted claims that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided Bello El-Rufai’s house, allegedly finding large sums of money and illegal drugs. Bello El-Rufai denied these allegations and offered a reward to anyone who could identify the person behind the claims. He also stated that the lawyer would need to provide the source of her information once identified.
When identified, the lawyer insisted she was not the original source of the story, saying she saw it elsewhere. However, she began deleting her tweets. Bello El-Rufai responded by saying that deleting the tweets would not help her situation and provided proof of her identification.
The EFCC also stepped in, denying the raid and clarifying that the images circulating with the claims were old photos from unrelated cases in 2017 and 2022.
Bello El-Rufai issued a detailed statement, calling the allegations malicious and fabricated. He accused the lawyer of attempting to tarnish his reputation and mislead the public. He reassured his constituents that no raid had taken place, adding that he doesn’t even own a residence in Kaduna. His family home, located in Unguwar Sarki, has been his only residence when visiting Kaduna.
Furthermore, Bello El-Rufai announced plans to take legal action against news platforms that shared the false story, vowing to use any damages won for the benefit of Kaduna North.
This incident highlights the risks of spreading unverified information online and the importance of responsible communication.
