Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has urged Northern politicians aiming for the presidency in 2027 to exercise patience and wait until 2031. He explained that President Bola Tinubu, as a Southerner, deserves a chance to complete a second term if reelected.
Akume made these remarks during an interview on Politics on Sunday, a TVC program hosted by Femi Akande. He reassured Nigerians that despite challenges, President Tinubu’s administration still enjoys the people’s goodwill, emphasizing the long-term benefits of the government’s recent economic reforms.
The SGF particularly defended the Tax Reform Bills, describing them as well-thought-out laws designed to rescue Nigeria’s economy. He pointed to earlier reforms like the removal of fuel subsidies and the harmonization of foreign exchange systems as evidence of the government’s commitment to rebuilding the nation.
“It’s easy to destroy but difficult to rebuild,” Akume stated. He added that the current reforms, though tough, are necessary for Nigeria’s future and will soon yield visible results.
Addressing the presidency issue, Akume called on Northern leaders to wait for their turn, respecting the current political rotation. “If it’s God’s will for someone like Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to become President, even at 90, it will happen. But for now, Northern politicians should look beyond 2027,” he said.
Akume concluded by emphasizing unity and patience, urging Nigerians to trust the ongoing reforms and the leadership of President Tinubu.
