The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully rescued a lawyer, Emmanuel Ubengama, and his niece from kidnappers after a fierce gun battle in Abak Local Government Area.
The victims were abducted on the evening of December 4, 2024, along the Abak–Ikot Abasi road while returning home from school. Reports say the kidnappers ambushed the pair and took them to a hideout in Ikot Ukpong village, Afahaobong.
The incident was quickly reported to the police, leading the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, to deploy a tactical team to track down the criminals. On Friday, the team stormed the kidnappers’ den, resulting in a gunfight. Three of the suspects were killed, while others managed to escape.
After the confrontation, police officers discovered the lawyer and his niece tied up in an underground facility. They were immediately freed and taken to safety.
Speaking about the operation, SP Timfon John, the police spokesperson, said the force is still pursuing the remaining suspects to bring them to justice. He also warned criminals in the state to desist from illegal activities, especially as the festive season approaches.
The police have called on citizens to work closely with security agencies by sharing useful information to help prevent crime.
