The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has achieved a historic milestone with Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Nafisat Balogun becoming the organization’s first female pilot. Her accomplishment is not only a personal success but also a source of inspiration for women in aviation and public service.
Balogun began her career with the NCS in 2002 as a customs assistant. Originally from Odo-Otin Local Government Area in Osun State and born in Kaduna, her journey has been marked by determination and resilience. Before becoming a pilot, she served as a cabin crew member in the air wing unit of the Customs. Despite challenges, her ambition and dedication led her to break new ground.
Her academic and professional achievements include:
- An advanced diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services
- A master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University
- Pilot certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida, sponsored by the NCS
Balogun shared that she faced tough choices during her career, including turning down higher-paying opportunities in the airline industry to remain in public service. “It was a tough decision, but my goal was to contribute to public service and fulfil my dream of becoming a pilot,” she explained.
Her success is a testament to the possibilities for women in traditionally male-dominated fields. Balogun emphasized the importance of her achievement, not just for herself, but as a beacon of hope and motivation for other women aiming to excel in their chosen careers.
The NCS celebrates this remarkable achievement, which signifies progress and encourages more women to aim high in their professional journeys. Balogun’s story demonstrates the power of perseverance, education, and a commitment to serving the nation.
This groundbreaking accomplishment is a proud moment for Nigeria and a significant step towards greater representation of women in aviation and leadership roles.
“Becoming the first female pilot in the NCS Airwing reflects my commitment to advancing both my dreams and the operational capabilities of the NCS,” Balogun remarked, encouraging young Nigerians, particularly women, to pursue their ambitions relentlessly.
