FCT Police Launch Operation Velvet for a Safe and Secure Yuletide

As the holiday season approaches, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command in Abuja is working tirelessly to ensure a peaceful and secure celebration for residents. Through focused initiatives like Operation Velvet and other strategic safety measures, the Command has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a crime-free environment during this festive period.

In the past 24 hours, the FCT Police Command has made notable progress in safeguarding the city.

Operation Velvet focuses on identifying and stopping vehicles that may be linked to criminal activities. Within just a day, this initiative resulted in the seizure of:

  • 36 vehicles with unauthorized tinted windows,
  • 3 vehicles without registration numbers, and
  • 4 vehicles with covered license plates.

This proactive measure aims to deter crimes before they occur and help residents feel safer while traveling.

The police recently arrested Muhammadu Bello Usman, a notorious leader of a kidnapping ring that has operated in Abuja, Niger, and Kaduna. This significant breakthrough shows the Command’s determination to protect residents from organized crime.

Officers successfully intercepted a dangerous robbery gang, recovering a red Toyota Corolla used in their crimes. One gang member was arrested in Zaria, further reducing threats to public safety.

On December 7, 2024, the police and firefighters teamed up to control a fire at the POWA Multi-Purpose Hall in Garki. Their quick response minimized damage and ensured public safety.

The FCT Police Command is employing various strategies to ensure residents enjoy a secure festive season:

  • Intelligence Gathering: Identifying high-risk zones and potential threats.
  • Increased Patrols: Officers are maintaining visibility in busy public spaces.
  • Collaboration with Other Agencies: Strengthening partnerships to respond quickly to emergencies and crimes.

The FCT Police urge residents to cooperate in making Abuja safer by:

  • Reporting any suspicious activity,
  • Following traffic rules, and
  • Supporting stop-and-search operations.

While the Command has achieved remarkable success, challenges like limited manpower and resources remain. Efforts are underway to address these gaps with government support, but residents’ active participation is key to ensuring safety during the holiday season.

The FCT Police Command is dedicated to providing a secure environment for all residents to enjoy the Yuletide season. With strategic operations and community cooperation, the goal of a crime-free celebration is within reach.

Let’s work together to make this festive season safe, joyous, and memorable for everyone in Abuja!
