Many Labour Party Reps are considering defecting to APC – Delta federal lawmaker

Etanabene Benedict, a member of the Labour Party (LP) representing Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie in Delta State, has revealed that several lawmakers in his party are thinking about defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Benedict made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on December 6.

His comments followed the recent defection of four LP lawmakers to the APC, who blamed internal crises within the Labour Party for their decision. In response, the Labour Party expressed disappointment, threatened legal action, and urged the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to declare the defectors’ seats vacant.

According to Benedict, the real reason behind the defections is political strategy as lawmakers prepare for the 2027 elections. He explained that many LP members feel uncertain about their chances of reelection under the Labour Party’s platform.

“It’s all about the 2027 elections,” Benedict said. “The recent political developments in Edo and Ondo States have unsettled them. They don’t feel confident about their chances in the Labour Party.”

Benedict also dismissed claims that the Labour Party is facing internal problems, suggesting that such accusations are being used as excuses for the defections.

He hinted that more lawmakers might follow the same path, saying, “There are others in the Labour Party considering the same move. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens soon.”

The ongoing defections raise questions about the Labour Party’s strength and ability to keep its members ahead of the 2027 elections. It also highlights how Nigeria’s political environment is becoming increasingly competitive and unpredictable.
