The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has advised Nigerians not to leave the country, a trend popularly known as “Japa.” He assured citizens that the CBN is working hard to create an economy where everyone—individuals, businesses, and communities—can thrive.
Cardoso shared this important message during the 59th annual Bankers Dinner of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos. He explained why leaving the country at this time may not be the best option for Nigerians.
According to Cardoso, there are two main reasons why staying in Nigeria is a better choice:
Nigerians who decide to leave might feel the need to sell their assets quickly. Unfortunately, this could result in them selling at low prices, which outside investors could take advantage of. These investors could buy cheap and profit once the economy improves.
Cardoso emphasized that Nigerians should stay and help solve the country’s challenges. He believes this is the right time for everyone to contribute to the growth and progress of Nigeria. International investors are already showing interest in Nigerian assets, and staying in the country means being part of the positive change that is coming.
While acknowledging the tough economic changes Nigerians have been experiencing, Cardoso reassured them that these reforms are essential for addressing current problems and securing future opportunities. The aim is to build an economy where everyone can succeed.
Cardoso concluded by saying that this vision cannot be achieved by one group alone. It will require everyone—banks, businesses, regulators, and citizens—to work together with determination and commitment.
