The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has strongly opposed the rumored plans to declare Biafra independence on December 2, 2024. The group believes such moves will deepen the challenges facing Southeast Nigeria, including violence, insecurity, and economic loss.

In a statement released by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze’s factional Secretary-General, the group criticized the activities of Simon Ekpa and his followers, stating that their actions over the past three years have caused significant damage to the Southeast. Once known for its thriving economy and education, the region now struggles with insecurity, forcing many traditional events and communal activities to be held elsewhere.

The statement revealed that violent campaigns have not achieved any meaningful results for the Igbo people. Instead, they have cost the region over ₦34 trillion in lost investments and further isolated Southeast Nigeria from growth opportunities.

Ohanaeze emphasized that those pushing for Biafra’s independence in Finland do not represent the voices of Igbos at home or abroad. The group urged them to rethink their actions, warning that such efforts might worsen Simon Ekpa’s legal troubles and bring more suffering to the Igbo community.

The group also criticized the Federal Government for its lack of reconciliation efforts with Biafran agitators, comparing it to the amnesty and negotiations granted to Niger Delta militants and Boko Haram members.

Ohanaeze called for peace and unity, urging those involved to abandon violence and focus on rebuilding the Southeast. They reminded proponents of Biafra’s independence that they would bear the consequences of their actions if they continue down this destructive path.

By addressing these issues, Ohanaeze hopes to guide the Southeast towards a future of stability and progress, rather than one marred by conflict and division.
