Nine people, including a Nigerian national, have been accused of running a large-scale money laundering organization in the United States. The group is said to have laundered $20 million obtained through internet fraud schemes, such as business email compromise.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced the charges on November 27, 2024. The accused, aged between 30 and 66, operated in Tennessee, Texas, Missouri, and other states. They allegedly set up a network of recruiters, known as “herders,” to find “money mules.” These mules helped transfer and disguise stolen funds.
To cover their tracks, the group used fake companies to hide the origins of the money. According to authorities, their activities had been ongoing since 2016.
The FBI led the investigation with support from forensic accountants. The arrests were part of a coordinated operation across three different jurisdictions. If convicted, the suspects face up to 20 years in prison.
U.S. officials have emphasized their commitment to tackling internet fraud and financial crimes. This case highlights the need for businesses and individuals to remain vigilant against scams that target their finances.
