In a recent operation, the Lagos State Taskforce successfully arrested four men suspected of robbing motorists stuck in traffic. These individuals targeted drivers during rush hour when traffic jams are common, especially in areas with poor road conditions.
The suspects, who are identified as Ismail Akinlade (26), Rasak Abiodun (25), Adefabi Gbolahan (25), and Rilwan Olaloye (20), were apprehended in the Mushin area of Lagos. The arrests followed a series of investigations that led officers to the suspects’ hideout.
According to Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the Director of Press & Public Affairs for the Lagos State Taskforce, the team had been closely monitoring certain areas where these crimes were taking place. The robbers exploited the bad road conditions to target motorists, forcing them to slow down in traffic and making them easy targets for theft.
“These individuals reportedly target distracted motorists, stealing phones, bags, and other valuables from vehicles while distracting their victims.”
One of the suspects, Akinlade in his confession statement said,
“Whenever I steal, I give the phone to the Number One (now at large) at Mushin, who handles selling our loot. After a while, we return for the cash proceeds, which we spend on drugs and gambling.”
Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, shared that the agency tracked down the suspects after gathering intelligence and conducting manhunts. One of the stolen phones traced to the Idi-Oro area in Mushin eventually led to the suspects’ capture.
“They have all been interrogated and will be charged to court immediately. I urge others still engaging in such crimes in traffic to desist immediately or risk the same fate as the arrested four,” he warned.
This arrest is a significant victory for the Lagos State Taskforce as they continue their efforts to improve road safety and combat criminal activities across the state. The taskforce’s work helps ensure the safety of residents and motorists, especially during busy traffic hours.
