The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Abia State recently discovered an illegal refinery hidden deep within a forest in the Isiala Ihie community, located in the Ugwunagbo Local Government Area. The operation, which took place on November 26, 2024, led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of large amounts of petroleum products.
According to Doreen Udugwu, the Public Relations Officer for NSCDC Abia State, the bust was carried out by the NSCDC’s Crack Squad. The squad uncovered the refinery cleverly hidden in the forest and found petroleum products at different stages of the refining process. It’s suspected that these products were stolen from a nearby damaged pipeline.
NSCDC’s Commandant in Abia State, Akinsola Aderemi, said that investigations are still ongoing to find all those involved in the illegal refinery operations. This operation is part of the NSCDC’s ongoing efforts to tackle illegal bunkering in the state, following the directive of NSCDC’s Commandant General, Ahmed Abubakar Audi.
Aderemi reassured the public that the NSCDC would continue to do everything in its power to ensure the safety and security of Abia State. He also urged the public to share any useful information that could help identify and apprehend more individuals involved in criminal activities.
This discovery highlights the importance of community cooperation in the fight against illegal activities and the need for constant vigilance to ensure a safer environment for all.
