In a heartfelt letter dated November 27, 2024, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, expressed deep gratitude to Governor Monday Okpebholo for restoring his full statutory rights. The Oba hailed this move as a significant victory for the Benin monarchy, describing it as “devastating on our detractors” and a moment of joy for his supporters. He praised the governor for respecting his position as the traditional ruler of Benin and for upholding the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom.
The Oba also acknowledged another key decision by the Okpebholo administration: the abolition of the controversial traditional councils established by former Governor Godwin Obaseki in Edo South Senatorial District. These councils had been created during the last administration amidst political tensions with the Benin monarchy, leading to a strained relationship between the Oba and the government. The Oba’s supporters celebrated their removal as a positive and joyous step.
In his letter, signed by senior palace chiefs including Norense Ozigbo-Esere (Osuma of Benin) and Edionwe Oliha (Oliha of Benin), the Oba thanked the state government for restoring the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre concession and addressing other issues that had caused concern under the previous administration. He emphasized that these actions were a reflection of the governor’s commitment to promoting peace, stability, and progress in the state.
The Oba of Benin expressed his belief that Governor Okpebholo’s leadership would lead to meaningful change and transformation for Edo State. He also stated that it was God’s will for the governor to come at a time when the state needed cleansing and renewal.
For many, the restoration of the Oba’s rights marks the end of a chapter of tension and the beginning of a new era of cooperation between the monarchy and the government of Edo State.
