Bode George Says Onanuga Will Face Consequences for Insulting Obasanjo, Who’s Old Enough to Be His Father

Bode George, a prominent member of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has condemned Bayo Onanuga for publicly insulting former President Olusegun Obasanjo. George emphasized that Onanuga would face the consequences of his actions, as Yoruba culture respects elders, and Obasanjo is old enough to be Onanuga’s father.

This dispute began after Obasanjo criticized Nigeria’s 2023 general election during a speech at the Chinua Achebe leadership forum at Yale University on November 16. In his address, Obasanjo described the election as a “travesty” and pointed out the worsening state of Nigeria, blaming corruption, bad leadership, and insecurity for the country’s struggles. He also criticized the current administration’s leadership and called for electoral reforms to restore trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In response, Onanuga, the spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, fired back at Obasanjo. He accused the former president of failing to resolve major issues during his time in office and for presiding over the most fraudulent election in Nigeria’s history. Onanuga also suggested that Obasanjo’s poor economic decisions contributed to the country’s ongoing economic crisis.

However, Bode George disagreed with Onanuga’s remarks. In an interview on Nigeria Info FM, he expressed disappointment at the disrespect shown to an elder and former leader. George pointed out that Yoruba culture does not tolerate such behavior and warned Onanuga that there would be consequences for insulting Obasanjo, a figure of significant influence in Nigerian politics.

This public clash between Onanuga and George highlights the ongoing tensions in Nigerian politics, especially concerning the country’s leadership and electoral integrity. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this conflict will affect relationships within the ruling and opposition parties.

“An old man who could be Bayo Onanuga’s father said something, and you took him on by blasting him right, left, and centre,” George said, adding that Onanuga had previously shown similar disrespect towards him.

George further emphasized the importance of respecting elders, stating, “Even if you want to react, the Yoruba culture does not allow that insult from him. Someday he would pay back, because there would be a day after, and that’s more important.” George also suggested that Onanuga should be cautious in his actions, as “it’s possible for him.”
