The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Committee has taken major steps to enhance agriculture, education, and urban development in Abuja. These decisions are set to benefit farmers, students, and traders in the FCT.
For the first time, the FCT has approved a significant investment in dry-season farming. The committee has approved the purchase of:
- 300 metric tons of NPK fertilizer
- 300 metric tons of Urea fertilizer
- 310 sprayers
- 3,500 liters of liquid fertilizer
Malam Lawan Geidam, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, announced this after the committee meeting on November 25, 2024. He explained that the initiative aims to encourage year-round farming in Abuja, boost food security, and reduce reliance on seasonal farming.
In a bid to modernize learning, the FCT Executive Committee approved the procurement of 1,000 laptops for senior secondary schools. These laptops, linked to the curriculum, will enhance learning by introducing a media-based education system.
Dr. Danlami Hayyo, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, stated that this ₦990 million project will help students prepare for computer-based examinations like JAMB, WAEC, and NECO. It is expected to make learning more efficient and accessible.
The committee also focused on urban planning by addressing the relocation of Apo automobile mechanics and spare part dealers. These traders currently operate along a road corridor, which needs to be cleared for the construction of the OSEX road project.
Chief Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), shared that 15,000 traders have been enumerated, with 12,000 already applying for spaces at the new site in Wasa District. Measures are being put in place to ease the financial burden on traders and ensure the relocation is fair and smooth.
