The Anambra State Government has announced plans to charge a man, Nnamdi Nnebe, with attempted murder. Nnebe, who hails from Awka, is accused of stabbing his elder brother’s wife, Mrs. Njideka Nnebe, during a family disagreement.
The dispute started when Nnamdi noticed children playing around his parked tricycle (keke) in front of the family compound. He accused Mrs. Nnebe’s son of being among the children, even though the boy wasn’t involved. Despite her attempts to explain, Nnamdi became aggressive.
When Nnamdi tried to attack her son, Mrs. Nnebe and her daughter stepped in to protect him. The argument escalated when Nnamdi ran inside, grabbed a dagger (locally known as a “daga”), and attacked Mrs. Nnebe. She used her hands to defend herself, but the knife pierced her elbow, leaving her severely injured.
The State Commissioner for Social Welfare, Children, and Women Affairs, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, visited the victim in the hospital. She condemned the attack and insisted that it would not be treated as a private family matter.
“Nobody has the right to harm another person, even in a family,” she said. “This case will serve as a warning to others who may consider such acts. We are charging him with attempted murder to ensure justice is served.”
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police Public Relations Officer, the suspect is in custody. He will face charges once investigations are complete.
This case highlights the importance of addressing violence within families and treating such acts as serious crimes. The government’s commitment to justice aims to prevent similar incidents in the future and protect victims of domestic violence.
Mrs. Nnebe continues to recover from her injuries, while authorities work to ensure that the law takes its course.
