Gunmen Kill Well-Known Anambra Architect Just Days Before His Mother’s Burial

A tragic incident has shocked the architecture community in Nigeria. Engr. Asomba Andrew Egbuonu, a respected architect from Anambra State, was tragically killed just days before his mother’s burial.

Egbuonu, who lived in Port Harcourt and was a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA), died on Sunday, November 17, 2024. He was attacked by gunmen near his hometown in Nnewi, Anambra State, and suffered gunshot wounds that led to his death after complications.

According to the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Egbuonu was on his way to finalize arrangements for his mother’s burial, scheduled for Thursday, November 21, when the attack occurred. Chike Chamberlain Ibeanu, the General Secretary of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, shared the sad news in a statement, highlighting Egbuonu’s dedication to the profession.

Egbuonu had served as the Chair of the Architectural Exhibitions and Competitions Committee of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, and he was also a former Chair of the Rivers State Chapter of the institute. His death has left the architecture community in shock and mourning.

As the family and colleagues deal with this heartbreaking loss, the Nigerian Institute of Architects has asked people to pray for Egbuonu’s family, offering strength and comfort during this difficult time.
