Social media influencer Martins Ortse, known as VeryDarkMan, has strongly criticized the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede. He accused Olukoyede of incompetence in handling the case of Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State.
The EFCC declared Bello wanted in April 2024 over alleged money laundering of N80.2 billion. Despite this, the former governor reportedly turned himself in but was later released without any significant progress on the case.
In a post on Instagram, VeryDarkMan questioned the EFCC’s seriousness and accused its leadership of focusing on minor fraud cases while ignoring larger ones. He wrote:
“Ola Olukoyede is a symbol of incompetence and mediocrity. Since April 18, when Yahaya Bello was declared wanted, the EFCC has done little to hold him accountable. Yet, they’ve managed to arraign over 100 people for smaller amounts, recovering less than N120 million combined.”
The influencer expressed frustration over the EFCC’s priorities, accusing the agency of arresting young people over minor offences while neglecting powerful figures accused of major crimes.
He added, “Your agency shouldn’t even exist anymore. Stop targeting small offenders and start going after the real fraudsters.”
This criticism highlights growing public dissatisfaction with the EFCC’s approach to high-profile corruption cases. Many Nigerians are calling for more accountability and effectiveness from the agency.
