Canada to Cut Immigration Numbers Over the Next Three Years to Manage Population Growth

Canada is taking steps to reduce the number of immigrants over the next three years. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced this decision, saying it will help manage challenges caused by the country’s rapid population growth.

In a video released on November 17, Trudeau explained that Canada’s population has been growing quickly, similar to the pace of a baby boom. This growth was partly due to the government’s decision to bring in more workers after the COVID-19 pandemic. The move helped businesses reopen, the economy recover, and a recession was avoided. However, Trudeau acknowledged that some organizations and individuals took advantage of the system.

He criticized certain colleges and universities for exploiting international students by charging them much higher fees than domestic students. Trudeau also highlighted issues with fraud, where bad actors promised jobs, diplomas, or pathways to citizenship that were never delivered.

To address these problems, Trudeau said the government plans to “pause population growth” for the next two years. Starting in 2027, immigration levels will slowly increase at a sustainable pace.

Trudeau also addressed the rise in refugee claims, noting that some temporary residents use the asylum system as a way to stay in Canada after their visas expire. He confirmed that these claims will be carefully reviewed, and those with rejected claims will be sent home.

This plan aims to fix flaws in Canada’s immigration system while ensuring the country’s population grows at a manageable rate.
