The Benue State Government is preparing to introduce a new electricity law aimed at regulating the state’s energy sector. This move was revealed by Mr. Omale Omale, the Commissioner for Transport, Renewable Energy, and Power, during a discussion with journalists in Makurdi on Tuesday.
Omale shared that a draft of the bill is currently under review by the Ministry of Justice. After this, it will be presented to the state executive council for approval. Once approved, the bill will be sent to the House of Assembly as an executive bill for further consideration.
The new law is designed to tackle electricity challenges in communities that either lack electricity infrastructure or face irregular power supply. Omale highlighted that the government is aware of the energy challenges faced by residents across the state and is committed to addressing them.
The proposed Electricity Act will also allow Benue State to join the energy market, enabling the state to generate, distribute, and regulate electricity independently.
This initiative aims to improve the power supply, especially in underserved and unserved communities, ensuring that more people have access to reliable electricity.
