In a major legal ruling, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has declared Tajudeen Baruwa as the rightful President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), effectively removing MC Oluomo from the position. The court confirmed an earlier decision by the National Industrial Court, which had ruled in favor of Baruwa as the legitimate leader of the union.
This ruling came after a press briefing by Baruwa on November 15, where he strongly criticized the inauguration of Musiliu Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo, as the new President of the union. Baruwa described the move as both laughable and disrespectful to the judiciary. He pointed out that the inauguration violated earlier court rulings that specifically prohibited the Yasin-led faction from interfering in the affairs of Baruwa’s leadership.
Baruwa emphasized that the NURTW is governed by a legal constitution that clearly outlines the process for electing its leaders. He also called on the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation to step in and ensure that the Appeal Court’s ruling is enforced to maintain peace and uphold the law.
The Appeal Court panel, led by Justices Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Dimgba, and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi, ruled that the appeal brought by MC Oluomo’s supporters had no merit and dismissed it. The court also ordered a fine of N100,000 to be paid by the appellants, who are loyal to MC Oluomo, to Baruwa’s camp.
With this ruling, Baruwa’s leadership of NURTW has been reaffirmed, bringing an end to the legal dispute over the union’s presidency.
