A 56-year-old man, Adesokan Olalekan, is currently on trial in a Lagos Federal High Court for his involvement in the illegal trafficking of cannabis sativa, commonly known as hemp. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) brought him to court, where he was charged with dealing in 120g of cannabis without lawful authority.
During the trial, Olalekan pleaded guilty to the charge. The prosecutor, Mr. Aondofa Korinjo, presented key evidence, including a confession from the defendant and scientific analysis that confirmed the substance was cannabis. Mr. Peter Ereche, an NDLEA official, testified in court, explaining how Olalekan was arrested with the cannabis hidden in a black nylon bag in Badagry, Lagos.
The court also received various pieces of evidence, including the defendant’s confessional statement and the test analysis report of the substance. The defense lawyer, Mrs. Vivian Ekwegh, requested the court to be lenient, noting that Olalekan was a first-time offender, had five dependent children, and showed remorse for his actions.
After considering these factors, the court convicted Olalekan. However, sentencing has been postponed until November 18. He has been remanded in custody until that date. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Nigeria and the efforts of the NDLEA to keep illegal substances off the streets.
