The ongoing defamation lawsuit filed by human rights lawyer Femi Falana and his son, musician Falz, against social media influencer Vincent Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM), has been postponed by a Lagos High Court to January 23, 2025. The case was adjourned due to missing court filings from both parties.
Verydarkman showed up at court dressed in eye-catching red traditional attire and was greeted by fans, but the Falanas were not present. The defamation suit was sparked by a video posted by VDM in September, where he allegedly accused Falana and Falz of taking N10 million from socialite Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, to sway justice in a case. Falana and his son deny these claims, arguing that VDM knowingly made false statements to harm their reputation.
The judge, Justice Matthias Dawodu, had previously issued an order to temporarily restrict VDM from making further posts related to the allegations. He also instructed VDM to remove the original video and warned against sharing more defamatory content until the case is resolved. The court served VDM with all documents through his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju.
VDM is appealing the court’s ruling, arguing that the case raises significant legal issues that should be reviewed. The case will now continue in January, allowing both parties time to complete the necessary filings.
This defamation case has drawn significant public interest, especially given the reputations of the individuals involved. As the legal process unfolds, it remains to be seen how the court will address the allegations and the impact of social media in cases of public slander.
He stated, “A refusal to grant leave may result in the enforcement of a decision that does not reflect a correct application of the law, leading to outcomes that may be detrimental not only to the parties involved but also to the administration of justice as a whole.
“The appellate court’s role in clarifying and, where necessary, correcting trial court decisions are vital in maintaining the integrity of the judicial system.”
